Literacy Instructors for the Hearing Impaired
in Alexandria Governorate

Project Context:

Illiteracy is a great problem facing the hearing impaired as it prevents them from enhancing their knowledge, acquiring new skills and finding job opportunities. As a result, a need has risen for the development of a sign language based literacy curriculum and of highly trained instructors to teach it.  

Objectives:

The project aims at training 6 university graduates to become trainers (TOT) in addition to training 60 university graduates on sign language and methods of teaching the literacy curriculum. The curriculum which will be developed and published comprises the government literacy curriculum based and the basics of Sign Language.      

Partners:

Asdaa Association for Serving the Hearing Impaired, was founded in 2000 with a mission to improve the conditions of the hearing impaired by finding adequate solutions to the educational challenges faced by them. The Association is responsible for the overall coordination of the project implementation, developing the curriculum and delivering the training.    

The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), (Refer to Training and Employment of Yachtsmen). The Academy  provides part of the training and the necessary premises for the classes in addition to accrediting the certificates.

General Authority for Literacy and Adult Education, an authority of the Ministry of Education. It provides literacy consultants in addition to setting up and implementing literacy programs for the hearing impaired in Alexandria. It also provides jobs for the trainers and the instructors.

Project Status:

The preparation for the manual on the Basics of Sign Language is underway and almost finalized. In parallel, the selection of trainers and teachers is ongoing.
