Training and Employment of Yachtsmen
in The Red Sea Governorate
Time frame: October 2002 - June 2003
New marinas developed on the Red Sea coast have led to an increase in demand for well trained yachtsmen. Traditional seamen in the region lack appropriate training, and have poor familiarity with the recent electronic equipments in yachts. Appropriate training is needed to capture the emerging job opportunities in the Yacht marine industry,
"This is a great opportunity for us. We know that they are giving us the best training, and that they expect the best that we can give them in return. This project will give us opportunities we never even dreamed of." - Amr, one of the trainees.
The ultimate objective is to create a Yachting Institute which would offer training to a high level of excellence for graduates to crew and skipper yachts. The institute would provide internationally recognized certification and commit to finding jobs for its graduates in the marine industry. At a later stage, it could also enter the leisure market, offering tuition and charter services for nationals and tourists. As an initial step towards the creation of the institute, this project aims at training 24 young men to become certified crew members, with jobs secured for them on yachts in the Red Sea Region.
The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), an educational institution of the Arab League based in Alexandria and with branches in Cairo and other Arab cities. It has delivered the technical maritime training and is issuing certification to enable graduates to work on yachts.
