Technicians for Ready-Made Garment Industry
in Dakahliya Governorate


Recipient of the Employment Projects Competition  - June 2004 Award

Time frame: January 2005- March 2006   

Project Context:

As the ready-made garments industry is considered one of the strategic industries for which there is great demand both domestically and internationally, there is great need for well-trained specialists to satisfy the job market’s demand and to improve the overall quality of Egyptian products to reach international standards


Objectives:

The project aims at training and employing 218 graduates in Dakahliya to work in different specializations in the ready-made garment industry namely: sewing and  maintenance technicians, quality controllers and manual and computer pattern specialists. The training is divided into a theoretical part undertaken at the NGO’s premises and on-the-job training under the supervision of trainers from the NGO in different factories.

 

Partners:

Small and Medium Enterprise Development (BASU), was founded in 2001 as an extension of the “Industrial Consultation Unit” of the Center for Development of Small and Medium Enterprises known as BASU. It conducts various activities related to the development of small and medium enterprises such as ready-made garments, textiles, plastics, furniture and metallic industries. BASU is responsible for the overall implementation and coordination of the project.

The Chamber of Commerce, represents the owners of ready-made garment factories in Dakahliya. It participates in the implementation of the project and prepares lists with the need of the factories and the available trained labor. 

Ready-made Garment Factories, they provide on-the-job training and contribute to its cost in addition to employing the beneficiaries.

Regional Union of Non-Governmental Organizations, provides the information on various community development associations in the Dakahliya Governorate with their needs for trained labor.  

Project Status:

To date, 156 youth have been trained in different specialization (127 in sewing, 12 in manual patron design, 10 in maintenance, 3 in quality control, 5 in computer patron making) of which 153 have been employed in various factories.
