Solid Waste Management
in Fayoum Governorate
Time frame:
November 2002 –April 2004 extended
Recycling garbage is an environmentally sustainable enterprise that can also be very lucrative. Experience has demonstrated that garbage recycling projects can create jobs, encourage start-up of small industries, while generating a cleaner, healthier environment. Some rural areas need a system for garbage collection and recycling, which would solve the problem of solid waste while providing a reliable means of income generation.
"Before, we never knew what the day would bring for us. Now, we come here to work and we make much more money than we did before. Also, the place is nice. I am very happy to be working here." - Saneya, from a similar project in Kalyobiya.
The project aims at setting a solid waste management system in the town of Ebshoway and the village of Abou Ksah in the Fayoum Governorate. Two transfer stations will be established and 114 managerial and technical staff trained and employed in garbage collection, sorting, and recycling. The project covers operating costs of the transfer stations until they reach financial sustainability and operate from their own income.

Association for the Protection of the Environment (APE) , an NGO registered in 1984 with headquarters in Muqattam. It works at developing appropriate solutions for dealing with pollutants and solid waste, and it disseminates its technological know-how in several governorates. It also seeks to raise the standard of living of garbage collectors, primarily through income-generating projects for women and youth, and through provision of enhanced services in the areas where they live . APE implements the project, provides machines to recycle garbage (produced in Kattamiya), and trains community members to work in the new stations. It also trains the youth to operate and maintain these machines.
Arab Women's Alliance in Fayoum (AWAF), an NGO dedicated to supporting the empowerment of women through social, economic, environmental and health projects. AWAF recruits candidates to be trained and work in the transfer stations. It will succeed APE in the management of these stations, once it has acquired the necessary experience.
The project is modeled on
similar APE projects in Kalyobiya, Taba, Nuweiba, and El Gouna. Garbage
recycling machines have been manufactured and staff training has been
completed in Abu Ksah where the transfer station is operational. The project
has been extended due to modifications in the Ebshoy transfer station.
The station will be enlarged and converted into a complete recycling station
and will be relocated next to a newly established sanitary dump in Kom Oshim.
