Rural Women Entrepreneurs for Dairy Produce
in Minia Governorate

Recipient of the Employment Projects Competition  - June 2004 Award

Time frame: January 2005- January 2008 

Project Context:

Reviving dairy production by women in rural areas raises the economic standard of the families while encouraging entrepreneurship and introducing healthy and safe methods to creating cottage industries.

Objectives:

The project provides 200 job opportunities to rural women in the villages of Saft El Laban and Beni Ahmed by training them on the making of dairy production such as yoghurt, ice cream and cheese, as well as to know how to operate small business (SYB). Of those 200, 25 will become trainers contributing to the training of the 175 rural women. The training lasts 3 months after which beneficiaries will have access to loans and outlets for the marketing of their products.  

Partners:

Minia Businesswomen Association, was founded in 2000 with the help of the Egyptian Businesswomen Association and aims at providing social and economic assistance to young rural and urban female graduates. The Association is responsible for the overall implementation of the project and assists the beneficiaries in marketing their products. 

Egyptian Youth Association, a non-governmental and voluntary organization registered in 1994. The NGO has implemented various projects with the aim of creating job opportunities for youth and rural women. The Associations is responsible for training the beneficiaries on Start Your Business (SYB), accrediting the certificates, assisting them in conducting feasibility studies and providing them with loans.  

Health Directorate in Minia, provides the necessary license for the Association to conduct their overall production activities and grants health certificates to enable beneficiaries to undertake their individual projects. 

Agriculture Directorate in Minia, provides the training and grants the accredited  certification to the beneficiaries.

Faculty of Agriculture, Minia University, it assists in the training by providing specialized professors in the field of dairy production techniques 

Project Status:

The purchasing of dairy production equipment and the setting up of dairy production center in Saft El Laban has been finalized. To date, 23 university graduates have  finalized their training.
