Employment Unit in Mokattam
in Cairo Governorate

Recipient of the Employment Projects Competition - June 2004 Award

Time frame: March 2005- March 2007

Project Context:

The problem of unemployment in Egypt is not only in the shortage of jobs as much as in the high expectations of new graduates in contrast with the available job opportunities. For this reason, employment offices are needed to redirect graduates towards these jobs whilst providing them the required skills.

Objectives:

The project aims at creating 150 job opportunities for youth in Mokatam by training them on two different professions: driving, with simple home repair skills and cooking, with banquet and catering services. The youth will be provided with jobs through an employment unit that will be established in Mokattam. Each professional training will last for 4 months and includes training related to the main profession of driving and cooking in addition to general training on first aid, inter-communication skills and hygiene.

Partners:

Fathet Kheir, established in April 1999 in El Hadaba El Wosta (Mokatam) by a group of young volunteers all sharing the same mission of contributing to the development of this  area and the empowerment of its inhabitants by increasing their standard of living. The NGO also aims at becoming a successful development model led by volunteers and replicable throughout Egypt. Fathet Kheir is responsible for the overall coordination of the project and for delivering the  professional ethics and inter-communication skills training.

CARITAS, provides the training on home repair skills.

Ezz El Arab Car Company, provides the basic training on car mechanics and maintenance free of charge.

The Red Crescent Society, provides the necessary training on First Aid

Project Status:

The employment office has been established. In addition to that, a database has been created to match job seekers and employers. Building awareness on employment office goals and assessing training needs is ongoing. The training for 37 youth has started; 25 are being trained in cooking and catering while 12 are being trained on driving skills.
